Butterfly Typography

Typography

Butterfly typography designed from real butterfly wings through a process of covering letterforms. The first word I chose to create is excelsior because it means ever upwards or ever higher in Latin. It also is loosely translated as onward and upward. This phrase personally resonates with me and reminds me always to overcome obstacles that come my way. The act of cutting the butterflies signifies that even though difficulties may transform you, they allow you to grow upward and continue onward. Right before I began this project, my grandfather passed away. He was like a father to me, and ultimately, the experience gave this project even more meaning because I’ve had to learn to overcome one of the most significant hardships in my life so far. Eventually, I expanded the project into creating names and initials as gifts.

Typeface: Baskerville bold

No butterflies were harmed in the making of this project. All butterflies came from responsible and safe butterfly farms and died of natural causes.
