I wanted to created type with the monarch butterfly wings by covering letterforms with them and then cutting around the wings to create the text as an experimental typographic study. The word I chose to create is excelsior, because it means ever upwards or ever higher in Latin. It also is loosely translated as onward and upward. This phrase personally resonates with me and reminds me to always overcome obstacles that come my way. The act of cutting the butterflies signifies that even though difficulties may transform you, they allow you to grow upward and continue onward. Right before I began this project, my grandfather passed away. He was like a father to me, and ultimately, the experience gave this project even more meaning because I’ve had to learn to overcome one of the biggest hardships in my life so far. This word took about 40 wings to create. No butterflies were harmed in the making of this project. All butterflies came from responsible and safe butterfly farms and died of natural causes. The typeface I used for this project was Baskerville bold. 23"x8" (letters 2" high).
Butterfly names, initials, and words created using various butterfly wings. Requests and price inquiries can be made. Each piece will run at a different price depending upon the length of word, size of frame, etc. Every piece will be different due to the natural differences in butterfly wings. No butterflies were harmed in the making of this project. All butterflies came from responsible and safe butterfly farms and died of natural causes. (Letters approx 2" high).
